Halloween @ Mint Museum of Toys

I have no idea how to blog about this Halloween event, because I felt there weren’t anything really Halloween about it. It wasn’t scary, nothing gory, but it sure was an enriching and enjoyable experience.

When we arrived at the door, the staff warmly welcomed us and promptly took a polaroid for us.

We had some time to walk around the museum ourselves, but truth be told, without someone introducing the toys to us, we felt pretty lost.

There were witches’ hats lying around but no witches floating around. So we stole the hats for a while.

Then Darth Vader appeared.

I felt extremely amused to see such a huge figure in that already cramped museum, and I felt even more tickled when I heard that giant say, “you don’t know the power of the dark side!”

Until he came charging at me.

I don’t like the idea of anything charging at me, it’s very scary. Unless you’re a small furry bunny, or a golden retriever. Or prince charming. Yea.

Tour started shortly, and we were brought to the different levels of the museum. Each floor has a theme, and similar toys are put together in that level.

So let’s say you have panda eyes and polka dotted face, you will be grouped together with this little boy below.

Oh, this! I’ve never seen this Darkie toothpaste before at all. I actually like it better than the current look.

So anyway, the Darkies were grouped together. So cute!

Mickey mouse with long noses.

The $18K poster:

To be honest, I think looking at the photos really don’t tell you much. Making a trip down to the museum does make  a whole lot of difference.

Just 10 fun facts to hopefully get your interest level higher:

  1. Mint museum is named as such because all the toys are kept in their ultimate mint condition.
  2. All toys are owned by an engineer. He is already past 60 years old.
  3. He forks out $40K each month to pay for rental of the museum.
  4. Girls may wanna marry an engineer. They could buy you lots of toys with that amount of money… if you get what I mean.
  5. Concept of the museum is “Around the World in 80 minutes” – simply because the toys are collected from everywhere around the world. Spend about 20 minutes on each floor and immerse yourself in the story behind each toy.
  6. All toys on display are at least 50 years old and each costs at least 10K. Imagine if you convert each toy into a stack of notes, you could use them as steps to touch the clouds in the sky.
  7. I’m not finished yet, those currently on display are merely 10% of the owner’s collection. Toys will be rotated to be displayed every month.
  8. Yes, there are toys manufactured in Singapore. They are the ugliest-looking of the lot. Oops.
  9. To me, toys from Japan look the best. Japanese are just amazing.
  10. And the most interesting fact learned from the museum visit – Bugs Bunny used to have polka dotted ears! Man, you should go look at the soft toy. It’s really cute!

I think it’s always interesting to visit a museum. Especially when you’re old and nothing much amazes you anymore.

You’d be surprised how much the stories from the past can warm your heart.
